LitWorld was founded by Pam Allyn, literacy educator and author, in 2007.

LitWorld was inspired by Pam’s first visit to Kibera in Nairobi, Kenya. There, she experienced the urgent desire children had to read, write and share their stories, and the barriers that stood in their way due to poverty. Upon her return to New York, Pam mobilized a group of friends and leaders to join her in building a community-based approach to programs and training that would deepen our global understanding of the power of literacy and voice in achieving equity, opportunity, and joy. Over the next five years, LitWorld launched our core programs: LitClubs, LitCamps, and World Read Aloud Day. Learn more about Pam here.
